I’d like to make two key observations about this discussion, both relating to how we frame these debates:
First, despite the fact that individuals cannot agree on first principles doesn’t mean there isn’t an optimal path forward.
Second, and following from that point, AI safety discussions cannot be separated from large-scale politics and geopolitics. The stakes are simply too high and the implications too far-reaching.
This particular discussion serves as a microcosm of the broader challenge our species faces: we need to fundamentally shift our collective mindset to avoid self-termination and extinction. The way we approach debates like this one reflects our capacity—or lack thereof—to navigate existential challenges.
In other words, we have a host of “old school” problems which we have to solve and now we have a new problem, “AI alignment” which not only also has to be solved but which trumps all other problems in spades.
